the S40 lamp is made as a circle with a slit, that becomes one continuous bend to form both a foot and a shade for the lamp, this makes it cheaper and more environmentally friendly to produce.
the open shade helps to give a variety to the light intensities by creating a direct light (lamp shade) and an indirect light (gap) adding an ambient/mood light that acts as a contrast to the hard metal.
the inspiration was to make metal become softer in its appearance by experimenting and making organic shapes into or out of a hard/solid material such as metal.
and the question of what the same process of turning/twisting does to each shape when using circles with different circumferences and cut outs, shapes such as letters or rectangles and light as material and a source was raised.
