There is something natural about casting because in whatever mould you have there are natural textures which are passed on to the cast. Nature has inspired or guided every manmade object/structure/construction, because in nature nothing is unnecessary. For example textures on plants are purely functional. A griddle pan has extruding ridges and pertruding troughs just like the ridges on leaves which guide water to the plant, the ridges and troughs on a griddle pan distribute heat and allow an even cook, as well as guiding the water out of the veg/meat that is being cooked on it.

As a part of a live project with Maybrey Foundry, the Savoy griddle pan came to life, looking at biomimicry as an inspiration. The savoy griddle pan is an exploration of textures and imprints. We are used to having the same straight lines or char on our grilled veg/meat and I wanted to change that. By mimicking the texture of a savoy cabbage the lines have now become organic. From an imprint of a savoy leaf, to a pattern that extrudes on the pan, that then imprints the meat/veg with the pattern of the savoy.

The handle is cast iron making it cost effective and sustainable , not to mention that it can be cast in one go and all the metal can be reused again. You can also put the whole griddle pan in the oven as there are no plastics in its construction.

Won project competition to be manufactured by
Maybrey Relience Foundry.
